Dale Maxey Seeing London again !!
Hi Everyone. As often happens on Fishinkblog, someone will come across my writings about an illustrator that they know, knew or have some connection to and get in touch to tell me a little more. This is always such a delight and no more so than when James got in touch about 1950’s illustrator Dale Maxey, who I also covered on my blog with his wife Betty here.
It appears that James’s friend who used to live at Dale and Bettys house In Formentera, left James the original hand-drawn mock up for Dale’s ‘Seeing London’ (one of his most loved and famous books). The photographs aren’t wonderful quality but then the book has been hidden away in a waterproof bag for the last 54 years so we can forgive it for not looking its best lol.
We can see above how some of the existing drawings (on the right) were altered to appear as the book we know today (on the left).
The blank spaces are left for the text to be inserted prior to printing.
Many thanks James for sharing these with us. If anyone has a clue as to what these illustrations might be worth or the best place to have it valued, James would be interested to know. You can leave a comment below. Many thanks Craig.
So great to see these originals! After seeing this post I went and ordered a copy of Seeing London, I can’t wait to pour through it. The illustrations look gorgeous.
Thanks Joanne, so glad it inspired you.
