Fishink in Edinburgh and Northumberland. Sarah and Carolle Morpeth.

May 18, 2012

I went to Scotland last weekend. Edinburgh was the first stop and as dramatic as ever.

I took some of the Craig & Tone range of ceramics to a shop in Broughton Street called Concrete Wardrobe who had offered to sell it. They’re planning a full display next month. So do drop by and have a look if you’re in the area.

I also went to visit an artist friend of mine Sarah Morpeth and her equally talented mum Carolle Morpeth who live over in Northumberland. Sarah creates beautiful works of art and books from hand-cut paper.

She presently has two commissions in progress. One for the Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond. You can follow the progress here on her blog.

The second, following her residency on Mull, is centred around the 1945 film ‘I Know Where I’m Going’. It will eventually measure 1690 cms in length by 8 cms in height. You can find out why here.

There are some amazing pieces around the studio and house that both artists have created.

Carolle’s work is more painterly.

She is creating some lovely small square canvasses based around drawings of flowers from Wallington Gardens. Both of the Artists run art courses and Carolle also rents out a stunning cottage (info here) near her home in Elsdon, Northumberland. If you’ve never been to this area before, I would recommend it as there’s plenty to do and it’s still relatively quiet, in tourist terms.

Thanks to my wonderful hosts. Whilst I was in Northumberland I also visited the amazing Barter Books in Alnwick and found a book that is right up my street, Advertising in the 1950’s.

It has all the artists listed by name too, so I’ll be using it to top up my mid-century knowledge ! The bookshop used to be a railway station and has a great cafe, tea room and model train set, as well as a vast sea of interesting collectable and second-hand books. More postings to come next week about a couple of great walks I did in the area.
