M J Forster, Magic Minimalist Painter

November 19, 2010

There’s a beauty to the work of M. J. Forster that you don’t come across so often.

I love his dappled hillsides and fine use of controlled water colour.  Born in 1975,

Matthew John Forster did a foundation year at Newcastle College of Art and Design prior to

doing a degree in Sports Science. He continued to paint throughout his degree and later

opened a gallery in Hexham, Northumberland, where his love of the English landscape became

truly apparent. He works using a process called reductionism.  Likened to a sculptural form,

the landscape is put through a rigorous design process until what remains is the very core of a place.

Initially, Forster’s work has a sense of perceived simplicity.  The heightened colour values

are realised by a series of controlled watercolour washes similar to the screen-printing process.

The methodical layering of the separate washes, applied dry on dry, allows the surface to

open up a much broader palette.  Forster likens the work to a sonnet in the sense that they

are created within a restrictive framework and out of that limitation a greater creativity emerges.

Over the past ten years, interest and demand in Forster’s work has grown considerably.

During this time the artist has traveled extensively to develop his watercolour technique.

Over a period of two years he lived, worked and exhibited his paintings in South East Asia,

Mexico, Northern America and Canada eventually reaching the Arctic Circle before spending

an intensive developmental period painting in Otago, New Zealand.

Working Plein Air in these challenging yet inspiring locations has defined the way

the artist has sought to find the very soul of the landscape.

Matthew’s work reminds me of the talented artist from the 50’s Eyvind Earle. I blogged about here.

Geraldo Valerio. Brazilian Childrens’ Book Illustrator

November 18, 2010

Geraldo Valerio was born in Brazil in 1970.

His quick sketchy drawings here remind me of the work of Quentin Blake.

He graduated from the School of Fine Arts,at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and

received a Master of Arts degree from New York University in 2000.

He has illustrated many books in Brazil, Portugal, Canada and the United States.

I like the fact that he has many styles to his work, some more painterly and others more cartoon.

Geraldo lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada where he enjoys

walking along the ocean and watching otters, seals and herons.

Inspirational work !

Rain Goose products for the home

November 17, 2010

Jocelyne Mange first brought Rain Goose to the public in 2002  at the One Of A Kind Show

in Toronto, which runs this year at the Direct Energy Centre from Nov 25th until Dec 5th.

With a desire to transform colourful textile design into functional home products, she has set out

to source the finest quality fabrics and create unique and fun motifs that flow with the fabric mediums

and product shapes she chooses.

Rain Goose products are functional and modern with a simplicity and boldness in design that makes

them timeless and lasting home accessories. Jocelyne  has studied, printmaking, sculpture and

silk screen design at Emily Carr College of Art and Ecole de Beaux Art in Geneva.

Her travels in Europe and Asia have inspired her esthetic for bold colour, richly textured fabrics

and practical design.

Fishink reviewed by The Present Cupboard

November 16, 2010

Big Thanks to Bridgette over at The Present Cupboard for the lovely review she gave

my products yesterday. Bridgette started her site when she was at a loss to find the perfect

present and keep a record of it for when it was needed. She explains ” I often find that

I will see great gifts when I don’t need them, then by the time Christmas or birthdays arrive

I have forgotten where I found them. ” and so the site was born. It’s still early days but I think the

idea will be most useful to those last minute shoppers looking for some help this Christmas time,

and with gifts and competitions ongoing, it’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

You can read the full review here.

Andy Gilmore. Graphics, Colour, Design at it’s best.

November 15, 2010

As a designer you become accustomed to seeing shapes and repeat patterns time and again.

Not so with the work of NY based Andy Gilmore , who describes himself as a draftsman,

designer and musician. With clients such as Wired Magazine and The New York Times,

he has established a solid reputation with his works being featured in countless publications,

shows and exhibits around the world.

This brilliant and colourful art takes you on a geometric and kaleidoscopic visual experience.

Being a musician, he’s inspired by the physics of sound and acoustics.

The feeling is surreal, futuristic and feels out of this world. Enjoy the ride !

More drawings and experimental shapes of Andy’s here and here.

If you liked the style of Andys’ work check out an earlier post on local artist Gary Andrew Clarke.

Jonny Wan and Sanna Annukka

November 14, 2010

Jonny Wan is a graphic artist based in Sheffield. A graduate of the Manchester School of Art,

he’s constantly striving to ensure his unique illustrative style (think abstracted facial expressions,

patterns, symmetry and hand-drawn lettering). He has a tough, street based style with a cool

sophisticated edge, the combination seems to work well.

Jonny is also pretty creative when it comes to product design, below are his I-pod covers from Bamboo.

If you like this style you may also like the work of Sanna Annukka who’s site is here.

Sanna is well known for her work with music group Keane and Finnish company Marimekko.

More about Sanna on the wonderful Print and Pattern site.

called ‘ Thrushes and Crabapples ‘. It’s a limited run of 95 prints and is selling for £195.

I love the colours in the ‘Autumn Morning with Dog’.

Liz Toole. Trees and birds of Africa and the Sussex Downs.

November 12, 2010

Liz Toole graduated with a degree from the Cardiff Institute in 1996, and then embarked

on an extensive tour of Africa. Often painting on recycled/reclaimed material, her recent

work has depicted imaginary landscapes that have a mysterious, timeless quality.

Trees take on almost human attributes, creating a rather emotional atmosphere.

Her inspiration ranges from the amazing varieties of life encountered whilst

travelling in Africa after graduation, visits to Kew Gardens and winter walks

on the Sussex Downs. She lives and works in Hove, East Sussex.

Liz says ” In the past three years, through rigorous research, I have been exploring

a wide range of subject matter to inspire my paintings, looking at visual and written sources

to fuel my quirky imagination. The names I give my characters play an important role

in defining personalities and, in combining visual images with text.

My characters are placed into humorous and/or bizarre scenarios. I paint using a mixture

of acrylic and pen, mainly onto pieces of re-cycled wood. Using material that once had another

life gives my work an unusual sense of history and is a process that I greatly enjoy. ”

Octavi Navarro, Childrens’ Illustration from Barcelona.

November 11, 2010

Octavi Navarro is an illustrator from Barcelona. After dedicating some years to Graphic Design,

he decided to focus his career on illustration, specifically children’s books, press and animation.

Octavi says ” My work is a mix between the use of traditional materials and the benefits of

digital software, to develop a modern style where colour and textures are the protagonists. ”

Beautiful work.
