Graphic Nothing
Graphic Nothing is the design site of super colourist designer Gary Andrew Clarke.
Born & raised in a 1970’s Leicester with early ambitions to become either :-
an entomologist (insects), a paleontologist (fossils), a space ship model maker
or astronomer, but fortunately (for us) non of the above actually happened.
Instead he studied Graphic Design in Leicester & Manchester and presently works
within the music industry in Graphic and Web Design. He resides in Manchester.
I wonder if Gary was inspired for his B/W work by TV Test Cards ?
More of Gary’s work can be found here and you can buy his designs here.
Selvedge Textile Magazine Feeds The Birds
Selvedge Magazine celebrated the London Design Festival on september 18th by remaking
an iconic city landmark at the V&A. Ken Livingstone my have tried to ban the pigeons,
but Selvedge wanted to cover their own Trafalgar Square
(created by illustrator Alice Stevenson) with hundreds of soft stitched feathered friends,
designed by printers Thornback & Peel.
What a great way to celebrate and good to see there were some boy birds helping out too!
David Weidman Prints Arrive
A large brown parcel arrived yesterday that I’d eagerly been awaiting from Los Angeles.
I’d been talking to David Weidman’s lovely daughter Lenna recently about purchasing
a couple of David’s prints, she was so helpful and eventually I decided upon two
colourful illustrations and the rest is history. Look how lovely they were packaged.
There’s a great cartoon illustration of David working in his studio.
Thanks again Lenna for all your help. If interested you can buy David’s work here.
Fishink Random Vintage Collection
I am and always have been a collector… there now I’ve said it out loud, lol.
In the past, I’ve collected records, books, cd’s, art materials and stationery products
and more recently it’s been images of times gone by,
usually with a 50’s or 60’s influence. I have a large collection of random images
that I’ve amassed from the internet from so long ago and from so many sources,
that I’ve lost track as to where they originated, and sadly therefore can’t be credited.
However I feel it would be fun to share them.
Inspiring, educational, amusing, and hopefully more.
Make of them what you will, they’re all part of my HUGE ‘ I like this ‘ collection.
Comments (as always) most welcome.
The Art of Swiss Air and the Travel Poster
Swiss Air enthusiast Patrick Eberhard has created an amazing homage website.
Not only has he detailed the fleet and design of their planes, he has researched the
uniforms and logos and has an amazing back catalogue of their travel posters see here and
then look under the ‘ marketing ‘ and ‘posters ‘ sections.
I also came across some superb other travel posters displayed on Big Daddy Hame’s site.
He has a collection of vintage movie posters here for those of you who might be interested.
There are also a couple of amazing links on my blog to other Travel poster sites that will keep most
people happy for hours, check them out. Bon Voyage !
Bernice Myers
Bernice Myers was an amazing childrens artist. She met her husband Lou and together they went to Paris
in 1952. Her husband was also children’s book illustrator and he started creating cartoons for french
magazines and newspapers, whilst Bernice drew for children. They eventually did numerous
collaborations on many kids books, in the fifties and were very popular. I love the fun figures
she creates and the textures and shading used within her characters too.

Fishink Card Range Mr Perkins’ Travels
For those of you who haven’t seen my website at all, this is one of the more
retro styled card ranges I’m currently selling.
It’s called Mr Perkins’ Travels, and is loosely based on a friend of mine who enjoys
getting out and about, although rarely, I must admit, by means of balloons !
There are ten cards in the range and you can pick and mix 5 or 10 cards across all the
Fishink designs as well as purchase them individually or in ready made packs.
Please have a look here.
Daphne Padden
Portrait of Daphne Padden (above) painted by her father.
British Artist Daphne Padden was born on 21st May 1927, the daughter of Percy Padden
who was also an travel poster illustrator working in the 20’s and 30’s.
Her strongest work (in my mind) is the work she created from the late 50’s to the mid 70’s,
working for M&S, Trust House Forte, the Post Office Savings Bank, British European Airways
and most famously the British Transport Commission,
and in particular the Royal Blue Coach Services.
During the late 70’s she changed direction and became a fine artist, painting in a
completely different style altogether, sadly she passed away in September of last year.
Thanks to the fantastic Quad Royal, Alison and Amy for the great images and for helping
to keep amazing artists such as Daphne remembered in the public eye.
As a great update to this post, one kind Fishink blog reader Aiden. shared a miniature he has of Daphne’s work. So interesting to see her range of styles. Thanks Aiden.
