The Birds

July 20, 2010

No I’m not going to start blogging about that famous Hitchcock film,

it’s all about the birds who still have a huge presence on many items

that we can purchase today. The bird trend seems to have lasted for a

couple of years now and is still going strong.

Needless to say, I’m another avid bird designer and there’s a variety of them available

on the cards, notebooks, stamps and stickers on my new site.

Here are a few in a more graphic style and them some who flew too close to the stars !

Please feel free to browse around www.F I S H I N K .co.uk

What style of birds do you like ?

Fishink Website goes Live

July 19, 2010

My website F I S H I N K went live today. So you’ll understand if I’m a little excited !

After about 8 months of designing, organising, market researching

and finding a great printers, it’s all come together,

and I’m delighted with the overall look.

There’s a collection of sixty greeting cards, all left blank inside for your own message.

Notebooks, stickers and rubber stamps, all in that Fishink quirky style.

Please check it out, have a browse, try some retail therapy or just let me know what you think.

I’d love to hear from you.

Exciting times !

Think again

July 17, 2010

It may just be the way my brain works,

but I have one of those minds that makes connections between things.

Individually they could seem totally random to anyone else, like for instance a bicycle and a blue sky.

In isolation they may not spark anything, but when you come across a third,

perhaps an illustration of someone cycling in the countryside on a sunny day,

the final image kind of makes my mind take rest, it’s like collecting the set or completing a match.

If this rings true with any of you out there please let me know.

A friend recently described me as having a ‘fizzy’ brain, which I think is quite an apt description !

Looking through some of my photographs recently, these three jumped out at me.

I do remember being good at that game of memory snap as a child

where you turn two cards over to make a pair,

perhaps this is the adult version !!

Rob Ryan , Julene Harrison, Cal Lane and Colin Wilbourn

July 16, 2010

Last year I came across a sculpture trail whilst on holiday in Northumberland.

This is called ‘Stell’ by Colin Wilbourn, and I was impressed by his combined

sculpture, come sheep pen, come living room ensemble. You can find this in Falstone, Nr Kielder.

The ironwork later reminded me of the not so new craze for cut out work in many forms

but particularly in paper. Julene Harrison and Rob Ryan are just two artists who work in this way.

And in case you wanted to get out of digging the field this weekend, think about swopping your shovel

and wheelbarrow for one of Cal Lane‘s beautiful works of art.

Birds

July 15, 2010

Everywhere I turned In Pembrokeshire, I felt I was being watched. Birds all over the place.

So I got my own back and drew a couple.

Final two images are of a Cow Parsley variant on a coastal walk,

and a lovely canal walk on our way back to Manchester.

Eyvind Earle and Lorelay Bove

July 14, 2010

Many people who know me will tell you, that in the last 5 to 10 years I’ve become a huge fan of artists, illustrators, designers, photographers etc from the 1950’s. I somehow feel I’m not alone in this .. lol

As a tribute to the work of Eyvind Earle and a mark of respect for his passing some 10 years ago this week, I thought I’d share some of his incredible work with you. A brief life history would include me telling you that he was born in 1916, and he had his first exhibition in Ascain, France, when he was just 13 years old !

In 1937, he bicycled across the USA, painting 42 watercolours and writing a 10,000 word diary.

In 1939, when he was just 23, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, purchased a watercolor for their permanent collection and he started a greeting card company. In 1947, he joined American Artists Group which has published over 600 of Earle’s designs and sold over 300,000,000 of his Christmas cards during the past 50 years.

He worked for Walt Disney Studios between 1951-54 as a background artist, Production Designer, Color Stylist and Background Painter for the DIsney animated classic SLEEPING BEAUTY, as well as, PIGS IS PIGS, GRAND CANYONSCOPE, PAUL BUNYAN, LADY AND THE TRAMP, LONDON BRIDGE, and WORKING FOR PEANUTS.
He also designed 5 murals for Disneyland.

He passed away at the age of 84 on July 20th 2000.

A man whos’ work many of us will recognise and remember.

In a slight ‘nod’ to the style of the artists working at Disney Studios in the 50’s,

here’s a glimpse of a present day artist  Lorelay Bove, who is also now working at Disney Animation Studios.

What goes around…

Two truly talented artists.
