Still searching for Anthony Hutchings …

June 26, 2015

In 2011, I came across a book called NurseryLand Annual 1969 and wrote this Blog post about the mystery illustrator called simply ‘Hutchings’.

Since then in 2012, the site Magic Jelly posted more, and last year the site Pictures From An Old Book published more.

From my recent searchings on Amazon, I’m pretty certain the illustrator is called Anthony Hutchings, (and could have changed that to Tony Hutchings) but that is still all that we know. He created these memorable illustrations back in the late sixties and early seventies, does anyone know anymore ? They certainly seem to be memorable books for quite a few of you readers from the USA.

I think his work is too stylish and elegant to not be featured elsewhere.

If anyone can shed any light on this mystery illustrator, or if you have any more images of his work, then please let me know. The plot thickens ! Have a great weekend too.

    Anthony “Tony” Hutchings

Hello! I too have been searching for this illustrator, my favourite childhood book was ‘Silly Dinosaurs’ by Hutchings. It is one and the same man although a different style (though it would seem he is competent in many styles). I love the intricacies and details in his cartoon dinosaurs and their scenarios. I spent hours copying the drawings when I was little, I’d love to know more about him. Any joy in the last 3 years?

    Adam,
    England.

Hi Adam, thanks for getting in touch, sadly I’ve not heard anymore about Mr Hutchings since I wrote the post. So pleased that it sparked a childhood memory for you, fingers crossed that one day, someone else will be able to tell us more. All the best, Craig

Hello, my name is Chloe, and my godfather was called Anthony Hutchings, or more commonly known as Tony, he was an illustrator, however he died last year. I don’t know if this was his work however, he has done multiple books and made calendars, as well as illustrations for the newspapers, whether this was his work, i do not know. I can ask my godmother about his work and see if this was his work.

Hi Chloe, how lovely to hear from you and firstly I’m sorry to hear of the loss of your godfather. But I’m very excited to hear of his name and the fact that he was an illustrator. If you could find out a little more and we can start to put some pieces together then that would be wonderful. If he is the same Anthony then if your godmother has any images of his work we could see that would also be pretty amazing and a little more news about him too perhaps ? I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank Craig

The Hutchings were three brothers Gordon, Tony and Roger. Gordon changed his name to Latif. They were superb artists, they did a lot of children’s cartoon strips for Fleetway Press. Latif Hutchins worked at Walt Disney’s London Studio for a short time, he left and was the top Greeting Card designer for Sharpes Classic cards, then Latin joined Andrew Brownswordes cards in Bath. Roger took over at Sharpes cards. Latif did a lot of jigsaw puzzle illustrations for Falcon Games ltd. Sadly Latif died from a heart attack about 30 years ago, I’ve lost touch with Roger and Tony since I retired 25 years ago. Peter Adby

        Hi Craig

Through sheer luck, I came across a very old copy of Heidi, with the illustrations mysteriously credited to “Hutchings”, too. I’ll send you some pics if you like. I dug around the internet, and this is the most i could find on the Hutchings brothers:

Likewise Alicia, if you can clarify anymore of your grandfather’s back story from your dad or have any more images you can share. I’d be happy to update the post. Thanks Craig@fishink.co.uk

Not sure if my previous comment went through. I have a children’s book, Sammy Seal, written by Shirley Dean and illustrated by “Hutchings.” Looks like his work. Def hard finding much info on him, and doesn’t seem to be an easy book to find. Tyndall, 1968 printed in Spain

Hello! My name is Oliver and I’m from Taiwan. One of my favorite children’s book is called “The Giant Walt Disney Word Book” (which was translated into Mandarin). In it, there’s a copyright page specifying the name of the writer as “Anthony Lionel Hutchings” (and birthdate: Sep. 24, 1939). I googled “Anthony Hutchings” and led me here. There are other things stated on the copyright page such as the distributor (Purnell & Sons Limited). Hopefully the information I provided can be of help!
